چکیده
Leo Loeb [6] developed an experimental approach to studying cancer and pioneered techniques for tissue culture and in vitro [7] tissue transplantation which impacted early-to-mid twentieth century experimental embryology [8]. Loeb received his medical degree from the University of Zurich [9] in 1897. As part of his doctorate, he completed a thesis on the outcomes of tissue transplantation in guinea pigs. Loeb's thesis inspired a life-long interest in tissue transplantation. His research culminated in greater than 400 publications, including a book called The Biological Basis of Individuality [10], in which he demonstrated the potential immortality of certain mammalian tissues.

Ross Granville Harrison (1870-1959)
A pioneer in experimental embryology [5], Ross Granville Harrison [4] made numerous discoveries that advanced biology. One of the most significant was his adaptation of the hanging drop method [6] from bacteriology to carry out the first tissue culture. This method allowed for further studies in embryology [5] as well as experimental improvements in oncology, virology, genetics, and a number of...
متن کاملPure red cell anaemia coincident with benign thymoma.
Pure red cell agenesis in adults was first described by Kaznelson (1922). Since then the condition has been seen with and without coincident thymic tumour, and by March, 1958, 14 cases of the tumour-anaemia syndrome had been reported (Davidsohn, 1941; Humphreys and Southworth, 1945; Chediak, Fuste, and Rosales, 1953; Ross, Finch, Street, and Strieder, 1954; Chalmers and Boheimer, 1954; Bakker, ...
متن کاملArteriosclerosis in Parkinsonism.
Some textbooks on general and neurological medicine give the impression that cerebral arteriosclerosis is an important cause of Parkinsonism (e.g., Alpers, 1945; Yater, 1949; Purves-Stewart and Worster-Drought, 1952; Wilson, 1955; Cecil and Loeb, 1959; Grinker, Bucy, and Sahs, 1959; Merritt, 1959; Baker, 1962; Brain, 1962). Whether or not this is so, it is often very difficult to distinguish cl...
متن کاملMorphological Changes Observed in a Mouse Carcinoma in the Course of Long-continued Transplantation, and the Influence of an Experimentally Produced Decrease in the Growth-energy of the Tumors upon Their Morphological Character
Through the graded action of physical and chemical agencies upon the tumor material before inoculation, it is possible experimentally to decrease the energy of tumor growth, as was shown by Leo Loeb in his investigations in serial transplantations of thyroid sarcomas of rats. 1 In a detailed investigation, a report of which will appear elsewhere, E. P. Corson White and Leo Loeb have studied the...
